Maya Roundup #3

This week I tried a few different things. Our current task is to do character interaction between two of the Body Mech Pack. I also took a look at some graduate showreels online for inspiration and something to aim for.

I attempted another stretch which is a different style but I think it is a bit better than the first attempt.

The character interaction task involves two characters working with each other, so this needs constraints, to work towards this I made the animation with the baby for a bit of fun and practice, managing the constraints will be quite difficult so I need to get more used to the process.

Rendering the last one in which the character falls over was difficult. There was a lot of very quick movement, I wanted the character to look cartoony so the motion had to be fast but this made it pretty hard to watch, adding motion blur to the render helped a lot with this though.

I also got it a lot more practice with the Mery rig, the last big task we were set was a lip sync task, I'd never tried this before so it was pretty tricky figuring out when to put the mouth shapes and which ones to use, online resources really helped in this. I still don't think I had the shapes as accurate as they could have been.

For the wave on Mery I really wanted to give the feel that the room she was in was lit from a window and the corridor was indoor lighting, the indoor lighting was relatively easy to achieve however the daylight was more difficult, I think it would have helped if I had more of the room modelled so I could visualise it better but working from what I knew was in shot seemed more productive.

I tried a few different ways of rendering these, we were taught briefly about 3 point lighting, which I was aware of before but didn't move much, I used this for both the body mech characters and for Mery, I found it quite hard to get right, especially using the back light to highlight the edges of a character, I found it was easy to overdo it.
