First Semester Showreels (2D+3D)

Image
These are my two showreels from my first semester of animation. It's fairly easy to tell from these that I really prefer 3D animation to 2D animation. I loved setting up lighting and rendering out all my 3D work. I found it really intuitive and I managed to put to use a lot of the skills from constraints to set the lighting up how I liked it. I tested a lot of different lighting set-ups, played with some textures and different types of material in Maya. Lighting and Animation are my two favourite aspects of the 3D work flow. I got a lot more confident working with UVs and Unwrapping 3D characters. I think I really need to work on my skill in mudbox, but I really want to push myself in lighting and the actual animation process. I now have a two week break, on this I plan on practising my Animation skills and researching and reading up on different lighting techniques and setups.  I also on the s...

Pirates Animatic

Image
Here is my first animatic, all of the drawings are pulled from the storyboard I did previously.  Not being that skilled in drawing meant I didn't enjoy creating the storyboard, however I did enjoy editing the animatic together to the voices I recorded. I also quite enjoyed editing the the music in premier at the last stage.

Bony Run and Climb

Image
This was my first attempt at a run with Bony, for the initial start to the run i tried my best to act it out and think about it. For the main strides i used key poses found online. It was fairly successful, it doesn't look natural, I think because the strides should be further apart. For the climb I started out just attempting to guess the poses so this wasn't working. I got a friend to help film me jumping onto a a wall and used that as reference which really helped me figure it out, although I do think the whole movement is a bit quick, I think ill definitely be shooting more reference in future. I'm currently in the process of rendering and doing final pieces of animation for my end of semester showreel, I'd like to squeeze in as much of this extra as possible, so my goal at the moment is to try and reel off each piece of animation like this in a day.

Maya Bony Juggling V2

Image
This is the 2nd attempt at bony juggling, its much improved over the last version, this was done using the worked out timings instead of going from my head. I think it looks a little bit robotic, I animated the ball sequence once then duplicated it to make it longer and copied that twice to get 3 balls. I think this left it a little bit stiff, natural juggling isn't perfect or the same on every throw. Here is the new version: Here is the first version for comparison:

Maya Juggling V1

Image
This is my first attempt at the juggling exercise in maya, this took a long time to do, the timing isn't as good as what I had for the 2D exercise, but this time I just tried my best to go for it. At the moment the balls look a bit willy nilly! My plan now is to go back into the flash file and study the timing and transfer that into maya. Then I can clean up the animation somewhat. The step up from this would be to use constraints to connect the ball to the hand properly, but that idea kinda messes with my mind just thinking about it so I think I'll leave that for when I have more time for experiments.

Heavy Lift v2

This is a more serious version of the heavy lift, I kept it really basic this time. Heavy Lift 2
